Super Science Day!

Today has been absolutely brilliant! We dressed up as mad scientists and completed some crazy experiments!

First, we were mixing different coloured liquids to make potions. We mixed together some coloured water, oil and washing up liquid. We thought that it was going to all mix up together and make a funny colour but we were surprised when the colours didn't mix at all! The oil stayed at the top of the container and the washing up liquid sank to the bottom!

Then we had a visit from Mrs. Johnson from Sam's Simple Science. We did an experiment with milk where we dropped in some food colouring to make pretty patterns. Then we dropped in a tiny speck of washing up liquid and all of the food colouring moved around! This is because washing up liquid is made to get rid of fat from our plates, etc. and milk is full of fat. So the washing up liquid moved the food colouring and milk around the plate!

We also made some silly putty! This was made of PVA glue and water which we mixed up together. We then added in a very special ingredient that made it stretchy and bouncy! We got very messy but had fun bouncing our silly putty across the table!

After lunch we tested different objects to see if they would sink or float in water. A Jenga block surprised us! It's heavy, so we thought it would sink but it didn't. It floated on the water.

We then used tins and string to make telephones. We spent a long time investigating how we would hear our partner talking into one tin. We discovered that the string must be straight and taught in order to hear your partner!

We had a terrific day today, please look at our photos below.
