Pirate day!

On Tuesday we had a pirate day! We came dressed up as scary, terrifying pirates. We completed lots of interesting pirate writing tasks including some pirate acrostic poems.

We also completed a treasure hunt, we followed some instructions left for us by pirates!

Look out for our pirate writing in our class assembly next week!

It's a little chilly!

Our science topic this half term is seasonal changes. On Tuesday we were investigating which material is the best at keeping us warm.

We each had a ball of ice with a little Lego man inside. He looked very cold! We decided we should warm him up! We felt and discussed the properties of several different materials. We made predictions on which materials we think would warm up the Lego man quickest.
We them wrapped our ice ball in our chosen material and left him to thaw out!

While we were observing our ice ball over time, we wrote our method. Some of us took a peek at our Lego man too often and the warm air that was being trapped by the material and melting the Lego man quicker kept escaping and it was taking longer! (This was explained brilliantly by Grace!)

We discovered that the best material for thawing our Lego man was a very thick plastic bag. However, we decided that this wouldn't necessarily be the best material for ourselves in winter as it wouldn't be very comfortable!

We also classified different clothing into Winter and Summer. We discussed the properties of the materials and why they are chosen to be Winter and Summer clothes.

Walk the plank!

Our theme for English over the next few weeks is Peter Pan! On Tuesday we were writing a character description of a mean, vicious pirate! We came into our class to be greeted by Captain Groves and she had a plank in the classroom!

She was a little bit mean and scary, we described her character and personality - she even recruited some of us to be in her pirate crew!

We wrote some fantastic WANTED posters on our characters.

So if you see any of these revolting pirates...let us know!

Fractions!

This week in maths we've been learning all about fractions. We can recognise halves and quarters and can write them as a fraction. We have even started to solve practical problems on fractions.

On Tuesday year 2 used Smarties to help them with their fraction work. We counted them, halved them, quartered them and then even worked out the fraction of the blue, red and brown Smarties!

Year 1 were working on pizza fractions. We worked out what fraction of the toppings on a pizza was pepperoni and mushroom!

Today, some of us are going to start finding equivalent fractions!

Being bossy!

Our new English topic is 'Instructions' and today we were being very bossy!

We were learning all about imperative verbs which are bossy verbs. For example: put, don't and give.

Today we played a class game of ‘Simon Says’ to show that we can listen and follow simple instructions.  We then discussed the term ‘Imperative verbs’ and decided they were words that sounded very bossy.  As a class, we created a thought shower of all the ‘bossy’ verbs we could think of. After that, we wrote our own sentences on whiteboards using an imperative word to start.

These were some of our sentences:

Go to bed now.
Put your books away.
Give me your money
