Super Science Day

On Wednesday we held our annual whole school science day. In Year 1 and 2 we had a big focus on materials and their uses.

First of all we were looking at whether different materials would sink or float! We predicted our ideas first and then tested them!

Our next investigation was to find the best material for melting ice. Each group was given an ice ball and a type of material and we observed over time to see which one melted first!

After that, we investigated which material wold make the best aeroplane!

In the afternoon we had a workshop with Anne from Sam's Simple Science. We experimented with ice plates, food colouring and salt. We were amazed to find that the salt melted the ice and make beautiful coloured patterns on the ice! After, we made tomato packet divers using bottles and water! And then finally, we made wind tunnels! Only we know how you can blow up a massive bag in just one, short breath! you'll have to ask us!

We would like to say a BIG 'Thank you' to Anne from Sam's Simple Science for coming in and working with us! We had a super day!

College Lake Trip

On Wednesday we had a lovely class trip to College Lake in Tring. We went on a Habitat Safari to help us with our science work!

We also completed some activities on plants and wildlife.

We went on a sensory walk which included smelling different herbs in the garden, creating our own leaf pictures and attending a nature concert!

We also took part in some pond dipping! We found lots of exciting creatures including water snails, boatsman insects and baby dragonflies!

We also became detectives on Wednesday! We were looking out for signs of animal life including footprints, feathers, bones and skulls and plants that have been nibbled!

We had a wonderful day and the children displayed excellent behaviour which was commented on by the staff at College Lake!

Below are some pictures of one group, photos of the other group are to follow shortly.
