Building Structures

This morning in maths we were solving a very tricky, sticky problem.

We were asked to build a structure using only spaghetti and marshmallows. Our structure had to be free standing and hold a 3D shape (Hemisphere) for ten seconds without collapsing.

In our groups we discussed our plans before trying out our ideas practically.

Two out of four groups managed to balance a 3D shape on the top of our structure for 10 seconds without it collapsing! Very well done year 1 & 2! 

Of course, for such excellent team work and problem solving, we were treated to a yummy marshmallow after!

Year 1 sports event

Today year 1 competed in a sports event at Hemel Hempstead Sports Centre. We competed against 3 other schools! Here are some of the events we competed in:

*Creating a tower out of speed stacking cups.
*Giant speed stacking.
*Obstacle course.
*Hurdles.
*Hockey stick control.
*Basketball.

We finished the day with exactly 600 points and we won!

Year 1 showed excellent sportsmanship and behaviour today! Well done!

3D Lego maps!

Our Geography topic this half term is Maps. We have discussed who uses maps and why we need them.
Last week we were using directional vocabulary to help a partner complete an assault course...blindfolded! We had to work really hard to use specific instructions to help our partner safely complete the course.

This week we were looking at maps of our school. In groups we used Lego to build a map of our school. Here are some pictures of our 3D maps in progress.

Chocolate cake!

Last week we were learning to appreciate poetry in our English lessons. We watched Michael Rosen perform his poem 'Chocolate Cake' on the internet. We loved how he described the cake and his facial expressions as he pretended to eat the cake.

We discussed lots of vocabulary to describe the chocolate cake:
Scrummy, delicious, scrumptious, tasty, gooey, creamy, spongy, melt in the mouth were a few of our favourite adjectives to describe chocolate cake.

Of course, we couldn't really describe the chocolate cake without having a taste ourselves!

What an amazing day at RAF Hendon!

To support our learning for our topic on transport we visited RAF Hendon. We learnt all about helicopters and explored all the amazing aeroplanes.

Today we learnt all about Thailand.

We listened to the national anthem, practised our Thai handwriting and tasted fruits from Thailand.
